Gestational Diabetes Diagnosis

Gestational Diabetes
Diagnosis

Women with gestational diabetes are at increased risk for specific investigations carried out as soon as possible during pregnancy. Other women will be tested between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.

Diabetes screening test called glucose tolerance test, and consists in the administration of a liquid containing 50 g of glucose. The body absorbs glucose rapidly, causing elevated blood glucose in 30 -60 minutes. A blood sample is taken one hour after ingesting the solution. A blood glucose greater than or equal to 140mg/dl is considered abnormal.

In women with increased risk of gestational diabetes, a screening will be followed by another test at 24 -28 weeks to confirm the diagnosis.
