Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes (or gestational diabetes) is a condition characterized by hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) found during pregnancy, usually the second or third trimester of pregnancy.

Between 6% and 8% of pregnant women suffer from this type of diabetes.

In 90% of cases, gestational diabetes disappears within a few weeks after birth. However, a significant number of women affected will develop months or years later, type 2 diabetes, or more rarely, type 1 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is not a contraindication to breastfeeding. Conversely, some studies show that breast milk can provide some protection against diabetes child. Babies born to mothers with this condition have a genetic predisposition for diabetes, and thus an increased risk of disease.
