Evolution and prognosis

Disease progression is variable, mild morning stiffness in patients with equivocal signs of sacroileita up to those with total spinal ankylosis periferica.Postura patient suffers severe arthritis and characteristic changes: lumbar lordosis disappears, there is atrophy of buttock, is accentuated thoracic kyphosis occurs Woodland anterior neck.

Disease progression can be gauged by: Schober test, measuring the patient's height, chest expansion.

The most serious complication is fracture of the spine that can occur even after a minor injury on a rigid column, osteoporotic.
Ponytail syndrome and upper lobe pulmonary fibrosis excessive complications are rare.
Prevalence of aortic insufficiency and conduction disturbances including atrioventricular block grade III, increases with disease progression.

People diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in adolescence tend to carry a negative prognosis, as well as males, females being less severe disease.

Only in unusual cases (column fractures, HDS, aortic insufficiency), the disease shortens life.
