Gestational Diabetes Complications

Gestational Diabetes
Complications

Diabetes during pregnancy can harm both mother and fetus. In early pregnancy, gestational diabetes can lead to birth defects affecting organs such as brain and heart. Also, the disease is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage.

In quarters 2 and 3, gestational diabetes can lead to excessive growth of the fetus, which is a contraindication for normal births. Plus, macrosomia (excessive development) is accompanied by hyperinsulinemia and hypoglycemia.

Possible Consequences for the mother:
- Urinary Tract Infections
- hypertension
- premature birth
- birth by cesarean section (due to child size)
- increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes

Possible Consequences for the child:

- neonatal hypoglycemia
- widening of jaundice in newborns
- deficiency of blood calcium
- respiratory distress syndrome
- macrosomia (excessive somatic development)
- Further increased risk of diabetes, mostly type 2
