Vitiligo Causes and Risk Factors

Vitiligo
Causes and Risk Factors
The origin of the disease is unknown, but believed that it is an autoimmune disease in which antibodies produced by the body attacking and destroying its own melanocytes - the cells responsible for skin pigmentation.

Heredity may be a contributing factor, due to increased incidence of disease within a family. In some people, it seems an event (sunburn, a strong emotional shock or stress) led to the onset of disease. However, it was demonstrated that one of these factors are causes of vitiligo.

Generally, vitiligo is associated with another disease: - Thyroid disease - seen in 30% of cases - A disease resulting in adrenal insufficiency - insufficient adrenal gland secretion - Biermer's disease (pernicious anemia, caused by a deficiency in vitamin B12) - Pelada - skin disease characterized by patches of hair loss
Risk Factors
- Autoimmune diseases - hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism (in their autoimmune) Addison's disease, pernicious anemia, or type 1 diabetes - increased risk of disease - Family history of vitiligo - observed in 30% of cases - Blows, cuts, sunburn or contact with certain chemicals (phenols used in photography or hair dyes) - A strong emotional shock or stress
