Vascular dementia is a syndrome with multiple etiology. It is characterized by the appearance of a cognitive deficit amid a disease, drug abuse or may occur in the context of the combined effects of cerebrovascular disease and Alzheimer's disease.
Vascular dementia, like Alzheimer's disease is associated with cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, diabetes and atherosclerosis, not least the carotid vessels.
