Anemia deficiency - Prevention and treatment

Preventing iron deficiency in newborns and infants begin during prenatal: pregnant women should check their hemoglobin level regularly and to below 12 g% andhematocrit below 40% and will prescribe a diet rich in iron. Premature infants and children born to mothers with iron deficiency and those with bleeding at birth, begintreatment with iron for 2 months and will last throughout the first year of life.

Although most cases of iron deficiency anemia Deficiency come from insufficient ironintake in the diet, dietary changes and no multivitamins with iron are not sufficient to cure the deficiencies. Treatment of iron deficiency anemia is oral iron preparations.

Warning! Iron supplementation is only by a doctor because it may lead to ironpoisoning.

Iron is assimilated best on an empty stomach, but for children who have stomach problems iron supplements can be taken with food. Iron should not be taken with milk or caffeinated beverages as they may prevent absorption. Vitamin C helps theabsorption of iron, so be included in the child's diet.
After the first month of treatment with iron, the doctor will repeat the tests to check thehemoglobin and hematocrit. Once restored, iron stores can be maintained with a diet rich in iron.

In rare cases, anemia deficiency Deficiency is so severe that the patient can be life-threatening, requiring hospitalization and blood transfusions.
