Vascular accident (CVA)

Vascular accident (CVA)

Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted or diminished. Thus, the brain no longer benefit from the intake of oxygen and nutrients, and in a few seconds, the cells begin to die.

Stroke is a medical emergency. Emergency treatment can make the difference between life and death. A prompt intervention can also reduce the risk of secondary complications or sequelae of a stroke.

In the United States, stroke is the leading cause of disability in adults and the third leading cause of death, heart disease and cancer are just more victims than AVC.

The good news is that the number of deaths from stroke is declining in the last 20 -30 years. Reducing major risk factors - smoking, hypertension and hipercolesteromia - is responsible for this decline.

Vascular accident (CVA) is of two types:

- stroke (cerebral ischemia)

- hemorrhagic stroke (cerebral hemorrhage)
