Obesity prior to pregnancy is a major risk factor for gestationaldiabetes. Other risk factors are also:
- age over 25 years
- genetic predisposition for diabetes (family history of diabetes)
- the existence of gestational diabetes in previous pregnancy
- hypertension, urinary tract infections, hidramnios (excess amnioticfluid)
- birth of a baby with birth defects, premature birth, birth with stillbirthor birth of a child weighing less than 4 kg.
- belonging to an ethnic group at high risk: women of Hispanic origin(Latin Americans), Native American, African American, SE Asian
