What is preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia is a complication that occurs during pregnancy characterized byhypertension, proteinuria (high levels of protein in urine) and edema of upper and lowerlimbs.
Preeclampsia (also called toxemia pregnancy) is defined as:
- a blood pressure greater than 140 mm Hg for the maximum and the minimum 90 mm Hg after the 20th week of pregnancy
- a urine protein level> 0.3 g in 24 hours
Preeclampsia usually occurs in late 2nd quarter or early 3rd trimester of pregnancy. It iscommon in multiple pregnancies, or women who have never given birth.
What is eclampsia?
Eclampsia is the final and most severe phase of preeclampsia and occurs when thelatter is not treated. Eclampsia is like an epileptic seizure, manifesting the loss ofconsciousness, stiffness of limbs and convulsions.
The disease can cause coma and even death of the mother and fetus and may occurbefore, during or after birth.
