Ankylosing Spondylitis - Evolution and prognosis

Disease progression is variable, mild morning stiffness in patientswith equivocal signs of sacroileita up to those with total spinalankylosis periferica.Postura patient suffers severe arthritis andcharacteristic changes: lumbar lordosis disappears, there isatrophy of buttock, is accentuated thoracic kyphosis occursWoodland anterior neck.

Disease progression can be gauged by: Schober test, measuring the patient's height, chest expansion.

The most serious complication is spinal fracture can occur evenafter a minor injury on a rigid column, osteoporotic.
Ponytail syndrome and upper lobe pulmonary fibrosis areexcessive rare complications.
Prevalence of aortic insufficiency and conduction disturbancesincluding atrioventricular block grade III, increases with diseaseprogression.

People diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in adolescence tendto carry a negative prognosis, as well as males, females beingless severe disease.

Only in unusual cases (column fractures, HDS, aortic insufficiency),the disease shortens life.
