Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease, of unknown cause that primarily affects the spine. It can also affect other parts of the body frame such as shoulders, thighs and knees, and tendons and ligaments around the bones and joints.
The disease begins around the second and third decades of life, the prevalence was three times higher in men than in women.
