Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, potentially debilitating, affecting the central nervous system (consisting of the brain and spinal cord). MS is considered to be an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body's own cells as if they were strangers.

In multiple sclerosis, the body produces antibodies and white blood cell that turns them against myelin proteins, a fatty sheath that protects nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. This results in inflammation and nerve myelin sheath that surrounds it. Places in which myelin is destroyed appear like scars. Eventually this may slow or prevent discharge of nerve impulses that control muscle coordination, sensitivity and vision.

Multiple sclerosis affects approximately one million people in the world, the incidence among women is two times higher than among men. Initial signs and symptoms usually appear between 20 and 40 years.

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable disease, whose severity varies. In some people, MS is a mild illness, and others can lead to permanent disability.

Available treatments can change the course of disease and reduce symptoms.
