The objective of treatment (usually consisting of aantibiotic) is to reduce the duration of the disease, relievesymptoms, to reduce the incidence of recurrence andcomplications (rheumatic fever, for example).
Curative Treatment
Antibiotics are prescribed for beta hemolytic streptococcalinfection Group A, to prevent sequelae, but may be used incases of severe pharyngitis caused by other bacterialagents.
Corticosteroids are used in cases of airway obstructionand reduce symptoms. Is always given with antibiotics toprevent bacteremia.
Antifungal drugs are indicated in cases of pharyngitisassociated with oral candidiasis.
Antivirals - in general, these drugs do not have clinical outcomes in viral pharyngitis. However,immunocompromised patients, antivirals can be effective.In severe cases of pharyngitis caused by herpes simplexvirus in immunocompromised patients, may prescribeacyclovir, famciclovir or valacyclovir. In cytomegalovirus(CMV) in immunocompromised patients, ganciclovir isrecommended.
Symptomatic
Menthol inhalation solution is recommended, smoking cessation, dietary intake of warm milk with honey andhumidifying the air.
