Tonsillitis is an acute or chronic inflammation, usually ofinfectious origin, the palatine tonsils (located near the palace buccal) or lingual (tongue around).
Tonsillitis is extremely common in children before 10 years,and less common in adolescents and adults. The tonsils arelymphoid formations - consisting of lymphocytes (whiteblood cell range to participate in the immune system). Andother lymphoid organs are: thymus (gland located beneath the sternum), bone marrow, lymph nodes.
All these bodies contribute to defending the body againstpathogenic microbes, participating in the production ofwhite blood cells produce antibodies. In addition, the tonsilsform a protective barrier of the airway. But, in turn, the tonsils can become inflamed due to viral or bacterialinfections, resulting in tonsillitis.
Tonsillectomy (surgical removal of tonsils) is the mostcommon surgery in children, but now resorting to thisprocedure only as a last resort.
