Gestational diabetes (or gestational diabetes) is a condition characterized by hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) found duringpregnancy, usually the second or third trimester of pregnancy.
Between 6% and 8% of pregnant women suffer from this type of diabetes.
In 90% of cases, gestational diabetes disappears within a fewweeks after birth. However, a significant number of womenaffected will develop months or years later, type 2 diabetes, ormore rarely, type 1 diabetes.
Gestational diabetes is not a contraindication to breastfeeding.Conversely, some studies show that breast milk can provide someprotection against diabetes child. Babies born to mothers with thiscondition have a genetic predisposition for diabetes, and thus anincreased risk of disease.
