Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines that is manifested by digestive problems - nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. In most cases, a short illness, the symptoms disappeared in three days.

Severity of illness varies, and in severe cases, dehydration and gastroenteritis leading to electrolyte imbalance due to fluid loss from vomiting and diarrhea. Gastroenteritis is a common condition that usually disappears by itself, in the absence of treatment. Accompanying dehydration can cause problems, especially the elderly and children requiring medical care.

Every year, outbreaks of viral gastroenteritis affecting millions of people worldwide, especially children.

Gastroenteritis is caused by numerous viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms that contaminate food and water. The intensity of symptoms varies depending on the cause.

Norwalk virus is recognized as the agent most frequently involved in outbreaks of viral gastroenteritis. This virus was first identified in 1968 in a school in Norwalk, United States, during an outbreak of gastroenteritis. Rotavirus is another type of virus often responsible for cases of gastroenteritis in children.
