Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia - Complications

Eclampsia is the main complication of preeclampsia. It is a typical seizure (tonic phase,clonic phase, followed by coma postcritica) that occurs in the 3rd trimester ofpregnancy, during childbirth or immediately after birth.

Fetal death is a possible consequence, and also the woman's life is in danger.

Other maternal complications:

- retroplacentar hematoma (effusion of blood between placenta and uterine wall)
- ARF
- cerebral edema
- cerebral hemorrhage
- pulmonary edema
- coagulation disorders

Fetal Complications:

- reduction of fetal oxygenation with prematurity and hypotrophy (growth retardation)
- fetal death in utero
- acute fetal distress during labor or during the first days of life
