Malnutrition - Clinical forms

There are two types of malnutrition: protein-calorie malnutrition(MPC) and protein malnutrition (PM).

If MPC, metabolic processes are caused by severe deficiency of calories and protein. Thus, the processes of growth and development are reduced, then stop, skeletal growth continues, while muscle and adipose tissue are reduced. Defense antibioticis altered, making some common infections in this period to be more severe and last longer (nasopharyngitis, acute diarrhea,etc.). In the digestive tract, atrophy of gastric mucosa and isespecially serious damage of the small intestine.

Because these changes occur secondary disorders of digestionand absorption and installs diarrhea, which emphasizes caloriedeficit. In advanced stages of MPC, the assimilation of proteincalorie diet and increased becomes impossible.
Protein malnutrition (PM) occurs in children fed up to 6-8 months, when they start diversifying a normal calorie diet, but deficient in protein.
