Neonatal conjunctivitis - Signs and symptoms

Chemical conjunctivitis consecutive instillations of silver nitrate is usually 6 -8 hoursafter applying the solution and resolve spontaneously within 48-96 hours.
 
Gonococcal conjunctivitis is more severe than other forms of conjunctivitis. Appears in the first 5 days of life and is manifested by intense itching, usually bilateral. Newbornpresents severe edema of the eyelids, followed by chemozis and abundant exudate.And patients have systemic manifestations (rhinitis, stomatitis, arthritis, meningitis, septicemia). Gonococcal conjunctivitis can lead to keratitis and blindness.
 
Conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia occurs at 2 weeks after birth. Range from mildforms with minimal itching to severe edema of the eyelids one with copious purulentsecretions and formation of a pseudomembranous. As with gonococcal conjunctivitis,chlamydial conjunctivitis may be associated with extraocular manifestations:pneumonia, otitis and pharyngeal and rectal contamination.
 
diagnosis
Diagnosis of neonatal conjunctivitis consists of an eye examination. Conjunctivalsecretions are collected and analyzed to detect infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeaeand Chlamydia trachomatis.
