Epilepsy is a chronic condition that is manifested by recurrent seizures due toexcessive electrical discharges of brain neurons.

Epilepsy can occur at any age but is more common in children than in adults because the brain is more vulnerable infant and child, is immature in terms of development.

In many cases, the frequency of epileptic seizures decreases with age, they disappearin a time variable. This benign familial neonatal convulsions appropriate occurring onlyin the first months of life, and then disappear without sequelae.

causes of epilepsy

In some cases, epilepsy occurs after a severe head injury, some difficulties at birth orof serious infections affecting the brain such as meningitis. Epilepsy whose cause isknown is called symptomatic epilepsy.

In most cases however, the cause is unknown, then talk of idiopathic epilepsy.

Recent studies have demonstrated the role of genetic factors in some forms ofepilepsy. Today it is generally accepted that idiopathic epilepsies have a genetic predisposition, which combines the action of multiple genes and environmental factors.
