Asthma in children - Diagnosis

To diagnose asthma, your doctor will examine the nature and frequency of symptoms and ask questions about family history of asthma or allergic diseases such as eczema, urticaria or allergic rhinitis.

In children over 6 years, the tests used to diagnose asthma are the same as in adults.Evaluation of lung function (spirometry) is a test that measures the amount of airinhaled. Tests can be performed at rest, after exercise or after taking an asthmamedication. Skin tests to detect allergies can also be used.

Although preschoolers may suffer from asthma, diagnosis is difficult before 6 years because tests are not accurate before this age. Some children just beyond the symptoms of asthma - 80% of children are asymptomatic episodes of respiratorydifficulty in three years. The doctor will analyze the type and frequency of symptoms inthe diagnosis of asthma. Sometimes the diagnosis is made only after a waiting periodof several months or even years.
