Miscarriage - Causes

In the first trimester of pregnancy, the most common causes of miscarriage are: chromosomal abnormalities, collagen vascular diseases (lupus), diabetes, hormonal disorders, congenital anomalies of the uterus.

Chromosomal abnormalities
Some genetic abnormalities are more prevalent in couples who are experiencing recurrent miscarriages. They can be detected before the onset of pregnancy.
Chromosomal abnormalities are present in half of cases of spontaneous abortion in the first quarter and only 20% of cases occurring in the second quarter.First trimester miscarriage is so common that it is considered "normal" (with the exception of habitual abortion). In other words, first trimester pregnancy loss does not lead to further investigations, unless it occurs repeatedly (when there were three miscarriages before 20 weeks of gestation). In contrast, pregnancy loss in the second quarter is less common and may be subject to medical investigations.
Chromosomal abnormalities may become more prevalent with age - so the incidence of spontaneous abortion in women over 35 years is higher. Age mother (too high or too low) is also the most important risk factor for pregnancy loss in healthy women.
Collagen vascular diseases
Examples of collagen vascular disease associated with an increased risk of miscarriage is antiphospholipid syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Diabetes
Diabetes can be effectively controlled during pregnancy. But an uncontrolled diabetes increases your risk of miscarriage and congenital abnormalities in the baby. Another problem is that gestational diabetes.
Hormonal Disorders
Hormonal causes of miscarriage Cushing syndrome, thyroid disease and polycystic ovary syndrome. Some sources indicate the failure of estrogen or progesterone as a possible cause of miscarriage.
Maternal-fetal infections
Infection with a large number of microorganisms increased risk of miscarriage: Listeria monocytogenes, Toxoplasma gondii, parvovirus B19, rubella virus, herpes simplex, cytomegalovirus and lymphocytic coriomeningitei virus.
Uterine anomalies
Abnormal anatomy of the uterus can cause spontaneous abortions. In some women, there may be a partition wall (uterine September 1) that divides the uterine cavity into two sections. Vascular septum is poor and can not provide sufficient nutrients embryo. Therefore, embryo implantation in the uterine septum is a cause of miscarriage.
Uterine fibroids (leiomyoma) is a benign tumor that develops the muscle fibers into the uterine cavity. Although most fibroids do not cause spontaneous abortion (actually, they are a rare cause of infertility), in some cases they can prevent implantation of the embryo.
Invasive medical procedures in the uterus, such as amniocentesis and chorionic villi sampling, slightly increase the risk of miscarriage.

The following are not causes of miscarriage:
It should be noted that exercise and intercourse do not increase risk of miscarriage in pregnancies without increased risk (without complications). However, in high risk pregnancies, the doctor may recommend avoiding intercourse and taking a prenatal leave. Women with a history of preterm delivery or other obstetrical problems fall into this category.
