Diabetes during pregnancy can harm both mother and fetus. Inearly pregnancy, gestational diabetes can lead to birth defectsaffecting organs such as brain and heart. Also, the disease isassociated with an increased risk of miscarriage.

In quarters 2 and 3, gestational diabetes can lead to excessive growth of the fetus, which is a contraindication for normal births.Plus, macrosomia (excessive development) is accompanied byhyperinsulinemia and hypoglycemia.

- increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes

Possible Consequences for the child:

- neonatal hypoglycemia
- widening of jaundice in newborns
- deficiency of blood calcium
- respiratory distress syndrome
- macrosomia (excessive somatic development)
- Further increased risk of diabetes, mostly type 2
