Gestational Diabetes - Diagnosis

Women with gestational diabetes are at increased risk for specificinvestigations carried out as soon as possible during pregnancy.Other women will be tested between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.

Diabetes screening test called glucose tolerance test, andconsists in the administration of a liquid containing 50 g ofglucose. The body absorbs glucose rapidly, causing elevatedblood glucose in 30 -60 minutes. A blood sample is taken one hourafter ingesting the solution. A blood glucose greater than or equalto 140mg/dl is considered abnormal.

In women with increased risk of gestational diabetes, a screeningwill be followed by another test at 24 -28 weeks to confirm the diagnosis.
