Vaginismus

Vaginismus is a female sexual dysfunction that is characterized byinvoluntary contractions of vaginal muscles, so that sexual relationsbecome painful or impossible.

Involuntary spasm of the muscles surrounding the vagina into thevagina and lower Trinity is due in some cases the associationbetween sexual activity with pain or fear. Anatomically speaking,women's genitalia are usually normal, but every attempt topenetrate the entrance to the vagina is closed by an involuntarymechanism.

Vaginismus may be the result of a woman's unconscious desire tostop intercourse because of an unpleasant or traumaticexperiences. Other causes are infections, injuries or irritations(driven by vaginal cleansing, spermicides or latex).
 
Primary vaginismus is distinguishable, appearing since the firstsexual intercourse, the secondary vaginismus, which occurs after aperiod in which the woman had normal sexual intercourse. In somewomen, vaginismus occurs only in certain situations: during agynecological exam or sexual intercourse with a partner.

Because of the pain that occurs in women with vaginismus,penetration becomes difficult or impossible. However, sexual activity involving penetration are not acceptable. This differs fromvaginismus frigidity, women characterized by an inability to experience pleasure during sexual intercourse or orgasm. Incontrast, if vaginismus, women experience a repeated inability tofeel pleasure during intercourse, but can have body throughmasturbation.
